Greater Vernon Cycling Routes In 1992 the Greater Vernon Parks and Recreation District (GVPRD) established a committee to plan for the development of an extensive recreational trail system throughout Greater Vernon. The objectives of this committee include:

  • provide a continous system of linear parks, pathways and bikeways to link urban areas with parks, scenic areas and local heritage features;
  • interconnect this trail system with trails and recreation opportunities in outlying areas;
  • provide a wide variety of linear trail options to satisfy and integrate a range of recreational users;
  • provide associated facilities such as parking, rest areas, information and signage;
  • ensure that the development of the trail system is integrated with community planning goals and the uses and values of adjacent properties;
  • enhance community awareness and obtain public and corporate support for future trail initiatives.

With three lakes - Okanagan, Kalamalka and Swan - as well as picturesque hillsides, cycling in the Vernon area offers many scenic opportunities. Cycle routes that best provide these valley perspectives include:

  1. East Vernon - Dixon Dam - Tillicum - Silver Star Roads
    This back-road loop travels through mainly agricultural/orchard lands providing a casual, rural atmosphere. Except for Silver Star Road, traffic is light and of a local nature. This is a moderately challenging cycle due to the elevation gain as one proceeds east. Besides the scenic value of this ride, cyclists also gain access to the BX Falls Trail off Tillicum Road. In addition, trails along BX Creek are accessed off Silver Star Road. These are hiking trails only, no bikes allowed. The preferred direction of travel would be out along East Vernon Road and return along Silver Star Road.

  2. Silver Star - L & A - Pleasent Valley Roads
    Another great rural setting with excellent views of Swan Lake and surrounding hillsides. A less challenging cycle that also provides an excellent rest stop at Cools Pond. This natural wetlands pond is managed by the G.V.P.R.D. and provides viewing of pond wildlife. The best direction for this cycle would be north along L & A Road and return along Pleasant Valley Road.

  3. Mission - Bench Row - Okanagan Ave. Roads
    This cycle is best taken south along Mission Road and returning along Okanagan Ave. It provides excellent rural cycling along Mission and Bench Row Roads with panoramic vistas of Okanagan Lake and the surrounding hillsides. On a hot summer day, Okanagan Lake provides a cool refreshing stop at either Paddlewheel Park or Kin Beach.

  4. Kalamalka Lake - Coldstream Creek - Postill - Kidston Roads
    This easy cycle route, though situated on busier urban roads, is still a preferred location because of some recognized road widenings for cycling use. As well, Kalamalka Lake with its turquoise colored waters can be enjoyed at Kal Lake Beach, or the smaller Kirkland Beach. These roads also provide access to Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park with its offering of hiking and mountain biking trails and a several beautiful beaches.

Greater Vernon offers numerous and varied scenic routes for cyclists. Though not described here, back road connections also provide options for cycling to smaller, neighboring communities such as Lavington, Lumby or Armstrong. Make enquiries at the Tourist Information Centres for these locations. When cycling in the Okanagan, remember to be prepared for hot, dry weather (sunscreen and lots of water), respect other users and have a great cycle.
